Canopy walk in Taman Negara, Kuala Tahan (December 1999) |
Taman Negara is the biggest as well as the most popular national park in Peninsula Malaysia. The whole area sprawls across the states of Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu. The part of the park most visited is in Pahang, via Kuala Tahan. The two other entry points are Sungei Relau and Kuala Koh but both are less accessible and less visited. The facilities found in these two more remote campsites are much less than that in Kuala Tahan.
In Kuala Tahan, there are many facilities and activities for visitors of Taman Negara. It is also very accessible especially with the opening of a road that leads all the way from the Jerantut town to the area opposite the bank of the main resort. A boat is always parked at the bank to ferry people across for 50sen. There is a small village at the bank opposite the main resort offering cheaper food and accommodations.
Taman Negara is a nice place to rest and relax and to engage in some light trekking and activities. Popular activities in Kuala Tahan include caving, tubing, rapid shooting, jungle trekking, fishing and the canopy walk. Although there are many things to see and do there, they really pale in comparison with similar activities in other part of West Malaysia with the exception of Gunung Tahan, the highest mountain in West Malaysia which is located within Taman Negara. Nevertheless, Taman Negara is a good place to have a taste of the many varied activities offered by West Malaysia.
